James Gillray (1756-1815) was the leading caricaturist of the late eighteenth
century, and is generally recognised as the father of the satirical cartoon. His
superb draughtsmanship coupled with a biting wit has rarely been equalled.
The great entrepreneurial publisher H. G. Bohn reprinted the plates in
a second edition in 1851 and it is prints from this edition that are
offered for sale on this site. They have been meticulously hand- coloured
using original examples as guides.
